Contact us before you decide to remodel your kitchen
When we were contacted by our customers for this project, it was mentioned to us that they had no intentions to revamp or replace their existing set of kitchen cabinets. However, they decided to redo their kitchen floor and the marble white color of the kitchen floor didn’t look too good with the flashy brown kitchen cabinets.
Quite naturally, they wanted to change their kitchen cabinets into something that blends in well with the floor color. But, rather than spending around $15,000 on buying new cabinets, our clients explored the various options like repainting and decided to consult with us. They were skeptical whether repainting would work because these cabinets were wrapped with a vinyl material known as refacing. However, if the right procedure is followed, it’s pretty easy to repaint refaced kitchen cabinets.
The most important thing in painting laminate cabinets is prep work. In fact, a whole lot of prep work. Have a look at how we accomplished this complex task and saved thousands of dollars for our customers.
It’s important to make sure that the laminate is in good condition. If not, repainting refaced kitchen cabinets is not worth it. For this project, the laminate was in a good condition and well-adhered to the surface. So, we removed all the hardware including the knobs. To avoid any kind of mess, we covered the adjacent areas and other materials close to the cabinets with painter’s tape. We suggest you to do the same in case you are trying to undertake some sort of DIY painting project.
Now, the key to repainting laminate kitchen cabinets lies in washing it vigorously with an abrasive solution. So, we did that and cleaned the paintable laminate surfaces well. Once the washing was done, we allowed it to dry completely before proceeding further. It is also important to ensure that the paint sticks well to the surface. So, the refaced cabinets need to be scrubbed with a sand paper to make sure the surface is rough for the paint to stick to.
We left no stone unturned to exceed our customer’s expectations. Accordingly, we applied a high quality oil bonding primer for prep up the surface for painting. This step is very important when it comes to painting laminate cabinets.
Once this was done, we went ahead and painted the cabinets. Our clients picked the Sherwin Williams Snowbound. It is basically an off white color with a slight touch of light gray. The color was perfect and added to the beauty of the kitchen. Most importantly, the color went hand in hand with the floor, which is the reason why our clients wanted to have their kitchen cabinets repainted in the first place.
As you can see from the pictures, the repainted cabinets look as good as new and of course, the kitchen now wears a modern, minimalistic look. So, what do you think? Repainting kitchen cabinets is a viable alternative to replacing them. On top of that, you will save a considerable amount of money by having your cabinets repainted.
