A Summer Home Improvement Project for Everyone

Summertime is here, and it’s the best time of year for a lot of things: wearing white pants, spending weekends at the beach, and finally getting around to a couple of home improvement projects. If you haven’t figured out which home improvements you want to get done while the weather is good and you’ve got some extra time on your hands, we’re here to help. Whether you’re looking for an easy DIY project or ready to commit to a full-blown remodel, we’ve put together a list of potential projects that’s got something for everyone.

Spring clean your home (better late than never!)

Let’s start off with an easy one. Were you too busy for spring cleaning this year? Take the time to give your home a deep clean and get rid of stuff you don’t need. We’ll admit it, though: the idea of spending a sunny day cleaning out your closet instead of sitting by a pool doesn’t sound that appealing. Save this chore for a rainy day when you’ve got some extra time on your hands, and don’t be afraid to get the whole family involved! Have everyone go through their stuff and put aside items that can be donated. That way, you can feel good about getting rid of clutter and helping someone in need.

Need to clean but don’t know where to start? Good Housekeeping laid out a 30-day spring cleaning checklist that can certainly be repurposed for the summer.

Paint a room (or two, or three!)

If you’re looking for a cheap way to spruce up your home, paint a room. According to HomeAdvisor, a DIY paint job will run you between $200 and $300. And experts agree: painting interior rooms is one of the best bangs for your buck if you’re looking to up your home’s value before selling it.

Deciding on paint colors can be overwhelming. If you need some guidance, U.S. News gives you a list of factors to consider and SheKnows runs down the best (and worst) paint colors for each room in a home.

Up your energy efficiency game

There are a bunch of different energy efficiency projects you can undertake, from simply replacing old lightbulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs all the way to improving your home’s insulation. Smart thermostats are one of the niftier trends to hit the home energy efficiency space in a while. These bad boys allow you to change the temperature from your smart phone and, over time, they learn your preferences and automatically adjust the temperature based on your habits. The jury is still out on whether the gadgets actually save money, so before you shell out the cash, do your research and decide whether one makes sense for you.

Replace your siding

Do you have to paint your siding more often than every 5-6 years? Are you noticing rotting or warping on the exterior of your home? Are you paying unusually high costs for heating and cooling? These could all be signs that your home’s siding needs replacing. This is a much bigger job than the previous three, but it’s well worth the effort. Siding replacement consistently ranks among the home improvement projects with the highest return on investment.

If you want to get an idea for how much replacing your home’s siding will cost you, Angie’s List provides some estimates based on material. One word of advice: you’re going to want to hire a professional to tackle this job.
